Curry Leaves: A versatile, Multi-Potential Medicinal Plant

Plants are one of the main sources from where lots of medicines can be prepared. Curry leaf (Murraya koenigii) is an important leafy vegetable used extensively in Indian cuisine as a taste enhancer. You will be glad to know that the curry plant is native to India and South Indian people use it in most of their foods (Source)
The use of curry leaves as a taste enhancer for vegetables is described long ago in Tamil literature during the 1st to 4th centuries AD. A few centuries later, the use of curry leaves was mentioned in Kannada literature. The word 'curry' originates from the Tamil word 'Kari' means spiced sauces. Curry leaf is also popularly known as Kari-Patta throughout India. Nowadays, the popularity of curry leaves spread to Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, Australia, the Pacific Islands and in Africa as a food flavoring agent (Source).
Apart from being the taste enhancer, curry leaf is also having enormous medicinal values. In this blog, I am trying to give the uses of curry leaves to solve your various health issues by citing some recent research. Each part of the curry plant is having health benefits. And hence, a number of chemical constituents from every part of the plant has been extracted to prepare various medicines. The most important chemical component responsible for the intense aroma are P-Gurjunene, P-caryophyllene, P-elements and O-phellandrene. Moreover, the plant is a rich source for carbazole alkaloids-2. Bioactive coumarins, acridine alkaloids, and carbazole alkaloids of the Rutaceae family were studied by a number of researchers (Source). Choudhury and Garg (2007) collected the curry leaves from 19 different Indian states and recorded six minor (Ca, Cl, K, Mg, Na, and P) and 20 traces (As, Ba, Br, Ce, Co, Cs, Cu, Fe, Hg, La, Mn, Rb, Sc, Sb, Se, Sr, Th, V, and Zn) elements by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). Singh et al. (2014) have described the plant as a miracle plant.  Mohan at al. 2020 in their research stated that Girinimbine found in curry leaves promotes gastro-protection against ethanol-induced peptic ulcers and improves healing via regulation of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant mechanisms.
Let me give you some health benefits of curry leaves:
